Adopt-A-Dog
dogs changing careersLooking for a dog?
Not all dogs are able to become service dogs. It is a hard job! Most service dog organizations have a 50-70% graduation rate, which means that many dogs who begin training to be service dogs eventually are made available to adopters.
We call these dogs “Career Change Dogs” because being a beloved pet is an important job too! Many of our career change dogs go on to work in some way too, albeit as a therapy dog or an emotional support dog. They are incredible in these roles as they have been learning to be highly attuned to people since birth!
Some career change dogs go on to become beloved family members or friends of a human and do not work, but adopters come to us because they want a dog that is well socialized, well adjusted and healthy. Some people simply know that they do not have the time or skills to raise their own puppy and they want a dog that already has a solid foundation of obedience behaviors. Others still come to us because they have small children and they want a dog they know will be good with them. There are many reasons people seek out and adore our career change dogs and we endeavor to find each dog the perfect forever home when they leave us!
Dogs career change for many reasons. Some may just find life as a service dog a little too stressful for them and not have any particular challenges. Others may find animals like squirrels or even other dogs too distracting to become a service dog. Once in a while, though it is rare, a dog may have a health condition or injury that rules them out of being placed through our service dog program. A little about our Career Change Dogs
- Our dogs are not offered on a “first come, first served” basis. Rather, we select the best home for each dog available.
- Detailed information is given to potential adopters about the dog’s temperament, personality, training, history and why the dog did not become an service dog.
- Adopters are asked for financial reimbursement to cover the cost of the dog, which varies based on the dog’s age, training level, and overall cost.
