Letter from our Founder

about our mission

I’ve been a dog lover all my life and am a firm believer that endless joy, personal growth, health benefits, peace, laughter, and love can be found in the relationship between humans and dogs. In the academic realm, I have conducted extensive research on the social benefits provided by having dogs in our lives.  In my opinion, there is no greater social bridge than an adorable pup to bring people and communities together. (Community research studies that illustrate the power dogs have on social and community interactions provided upon request for any interested parties.)  My decision to establish Diggity Dogs, however, was fueled by more than just my love of dogs. I was studying Psychology at Smith College the first time I learned about the use of psychiatric service dogs. I had never even heard of such a thing!  I was fascinated and dedicated much of my time and research to learning about the efficacy of employing psychiatric and medical alert dogs to treat a wide range of conditions.

My decision to establish Diggity Dogs, however, was fueled by more than just my love of dogs. I was studying Psychology at Smith College the first time I learned about the use of psychiatric service dogs. I had never even heard of such a thing! I was fascinated and dedicated much of my time and research to learning about the efficacy, method, and potential for psychiatric service dogs to assist a large range of conditions that affect human mental health and emotional wellness. The more I learned, the more I researched, the more passionate I became about the undeniable, remarkable, and profound benefits psychiatric service dogs have on the lives of their human partners.

As I unearthed more and more evidence of powerful benefits that psychiatric service dogs provide, I became more passionate about raising the awareness of the benefits of psychiatric and medical alert service dogs, as it was obvious that most people are unaware of the positive impact they can have on people’s lives.

I confounded me that more people were not employing service dogs to change their lives.  Why would that be?  It wasn’t until I looked into acquiring a psychiatric or medical alert service dog that I realized that the people I was passionate about helping were not being served by more than a handful of organizations, if at all!  It was then that I realized that I would have to found an organization in order to do just that.  Several years and a lot of sweat and tears later, Diggity Dogs Service Dogs was founded.
